His class was full of soon to be teachers and his question was “How has curriculum affected you as an artist?”

My answer brought me to a weird and realization…. there are so many ways for school to teach an artist how to grow but also so many ways for a school to condition an artist towards growing into art that is not representative of their own desires, style, and experimentation. It is an unavoidable thing that every teacher no matter what subject has to create a rubric to grade on, but the more strict the rubric the more narrow the variety they art will have. As I began to answer the teachers question on curriculum I realized that the balance of a narrow and wide instruction is found in language. We as teachers need to choose our words carefully so that students are given a launching off point but not a clear finish line. The more we use words that are definite like (has to include, or no visible lines) for anything other than exercises it becomes destructive to a students ability to figure out there own place within the art world.

The finish line is not a place it’s a process

The finish line is not a place it’s a process

The most expensive piece of art ever auctioned

The most expensive piece of art ever auctioned:
104 Million-Dollar Man: Sculpture sets auction record

A life-size bronze sculpture of a man by Alberto Giacometti was sold in London Wednesday night to an unknown bidder for $104.3 million, breaking the record for a work of art purchased at auction.

By CAROL VOGEL

ANTHONY DEVLIN / AP

Auctioneer Henry Wyndam takes bids on Wednesday for the sculpture “Walking Man I” (“L’Homme qui marche I”) by Alberto Giacometti at Sotheby’s in London.

A life-size bronze sculpture of a man by Alberto Giacometti was sold in London Wednesday night to an unknown bidder for $104.3 million, breaking the record for a work of art purchased at auction.

It took just eight minutes of bidding for about 10 bidders to reach the hammer price for “Walking Man I,” which opened at slightly more than $19 million, Sotheby’s auction house said.

The mystery buyer bid by phone, and as the price kept rising, the bidding narrowed to two phone contenders bidding via a couple of Sotheby’s employees.

The previous record was $104.1 million, for a 1905 Pablo Picasso, “Boy With a Pipe (The Young Apprentice),” at Sotheby’s in New York in 2004.

Sotheby’s had expected the sculpture to bring $19.2 million to $28.8 million.

The 6-foot-tall sculpture was cast in 1961 in an edition of six. The work by the 20th century Swiss-Italian artist, known for his depiction of postwar European existential angst, is one of the most recognizable images of modern art.

“Walking Man I” was sold by Dresdner Bank in Germany, which had acquired it in 1980.

It had been commissioned — along with a group of others bronzes — by the architect Gordon Bunshaft for Chase Manhattan Plaza in downtown Manhattan, where it was to stand alongside Bunshaft’s 60-story glass-and-steel Chase headquarters.

Although the installation was never realized, some of the sculptures — and others Giacometti created as experiments for the project — were made; many, though, he destroyed.

The Giacometti was not the only work to fetch a high price at Sotheby’s on Wednesday evening. A 1913 landscape by Gustav Klimt, “Church in Cassone — Landscape With Cypresses,” brought $43.2 million from another telephone bidder.

The art understands you and you it…………. but maybe to the rest of the world it looks like crap. Even if it is crap, we cannot let this be a reflection on us. If a lawyer loses a case that doesn’t have any implication on him as a good or bad person (maybe not the best lawer). However, if an artist creates art that is flawed, all of a sudden it becomes a window into them as a flawed person.

The truth lies in that we ought to make more crapy art in hopes that we discover new directions to take our art. A bad sketch does not determine wether we are a bad or good person it is wether we are willing to make more or not. Art cannot be a TRUE reflection of any persons character unless the subject matter suggests something about them. Any medium an artist choses will lose emotion intended for the painting or existing in the real subject. Even the best artist of all time are still only left with a handful of what people consider masterpieces. The point is that most artist dont make top notch amazing work all of the time and we learn through our failures.
